Teething

Teething is the process by which a baby starts to develop teeth that they show through the gums. Teething can start anytime between 5 and 12 months. As a baby grows teeth, they may be a bit irritable as the process can be slightly painful. Babies tend to bite on their fingers or put stuff such as toys in their mouths to deal with the discomfort that teething causes.

Signs and Symptoms

  • The baby’s gums may be a bit swollen during the process. It should be a normal process but in this case of bleeding, you should contact a doctor.
  • Your baby might drool a lot as their teeth are beginning to form. Careful on this one, it’s about to be a whole bath of saliva.
  • They often put things in the mouth.
  • Babies will rub their cheeks because of the pains from the gum.

The drool started when my daughter was four months old, and I was sure that meant that little teeth would pop through her gumline sometime soon. Hands were often in her mouth.  She would toss and turn, moaning as if all her teeth were attempting to break through at once. My poor baby! Teething bites! There are various ways to help ease a baby’s teething discomfort though. Two of the major ones include:

  • Rub the cheeks of your baby gently to massage it and ease the baby’s discomfort.
  • Let your baby sip some water from a bottle to numb the pain a little

In case you notice that your baby has not started teething past the first seven months, it is recommended that you visit a doctor and have the baby checked. However, it is good to note that teething occurs differently for various babies, and what works for one baby might not work for another. Regardless of the speed of development of the teeth, enjoy time with your baby as you watch them grow.
